What is Juvederm® Ultra?
Juvederm® Ultra is a type of dermal filler that can be injected beneath the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are a type of soft tissue filler that can restore the appearance of youthfulness to your face. Juvederm® Ultra is not the same as Botox. Botox acts by ‘freezing’ and relaxing the facial muscles, while Juvederm® Ultra acts to increases appearance of soft and smooth skin by merely ‘filling in’ fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm® Ultra is most commonly used to increase lip fullness and decrease fine lines surrounding the lips (e.g., could be a result of smoking). The results of Juvederm® Ultra can last for up to 12 months. For optimal results, multiple syringes may be required, and touch-up treatments are often recommended to prolong the effects of Juvederm® Ultra.
You may also be wondering how Juvederm® Ultra differs from regular Juvederm®. Juvederm® Ultra is not as thick as regular Juvederm® and is injected deeper into the skin, filling lines better than regular Juvederm®.
Is Juvederm® Ultra safe?
Yes, Juvederm® Ultra is safe to administer and has been approved by the US food and drug administration (FDA) for the correction of mild to moderate facial wrinkles (e.g., lip, chin, forehead). However, some people may experience mild side-effects after treatment around the site of injection. Side-effects may include, but are not limited to:
If you experience any discomfort or have any concerns after your treatment, please let us know so that we may provide assistance. Often times, some results can be observed immediately, as the mere presence of Juvederm® Ultra under the skin can create the look of fuller, more youthful looking, skin. However, it can several weeks for Juvederm® Ultra injections to fully settle into your face, so ensure you allow a sufficient amount of time for full results to be seen.
Note: an excessive use of fillers can cause long-term damage to the skin. Thankfully, our medical professionals at ShotDocMD have been trained to deliver an effective and safe amount of filler according to your individual needs.
What is involved in a Juvederm® Ultra procedure?
A typical Juvederm® Ultra procedure involves the physical injection of a gel-like substance under the skin to the area desired to be corrected. Juvederm® Ultra injections consist of Hyaluronic acid and water, which when combined and injected, creates this gel-like substance that increases facial volume. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by our bodies to keep tissues hydrated. As we age, levels of hyaluronic acid decrease, resulting in an increase in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Typically, a local anesthetic (e.g., lidocaine) is applied prior to the injection to ensure optimal comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the desired level of correction, multiple syringes may be required.
