Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injectable that treats fine lines and wrinkles in the face. It’s classified as a neuromodulator, a category of drugs that affects nerves, which in turn affects the movement of muscles.

Essentially, Botox slows the movement of the muscles that make facial expressions that lead to lines and wrinkles. So, expertly placed Botox can smooth or even eliminate fine lines and wrinkles in the top one-third of your face. It can also treat other areas.

Botox has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use for more than 20 years. It’s safe and effective when administered by a highly trained professional.

What types of wrinkles does Botox treat?

Botox treats:

  • Lines between the eyebrows (frown lines or “11s”)
  • Lines across the forehead
  • Lines and wrinkles around the outer eyes (crow’s feet)

Botox can also improve the appearance of the upper lip (“lip flip”), relax neck bands, rejuvenate a sagging neck (“Nefertiti” neck lift), and slim the jawline.*

Wrinkles around the nose and mouth areas develop due to the loss of the skin’s natural support substances as you age. Botox doesn’t restore volume in those areas, but dermal fillers can do so.

Does Botox have noncosmetic uses?

Yes, Botox is a very versatile drug and is FDA-approved for several other purposes, such as treating migraine headaches and hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating). At ShotDocMD, Dr. Kim also uses Botox to treat temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) in the jaw.

What is a Botox appointment like?

Botox appointments start with a talk with Dr. Kim. She has more than 18 years of specialized experience with injectables, and her extensive knowledge of aging and facial anatomy really sets her apart from other injectors. This unique background and skill set allows her to give you the ideal treatment for your face and personal goals.

The treatment takes only about 10 minutes. Dr. Kim uses a very fine needle to skillfully inject the Botox. You’ll feel a quick sting that lasts a few seconds, with no discomfort afterward.

How long do Botox results last?

Botox generally lasts three to four months. After a few treatments, the effects may last longer, potentially as long as six to nine months. Periodic Botox maintenance sessions let you keep your new look with no disruptions.

ShotDocMD offers convenient Botox appointments in both offices and office visits take only about 15 minutes. Book your appointment online or call the location nearest you.
