Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is an innovative way to stimulate skin healing and enhancement. The treatment involves inserting very fine, short needles into the skin. This creates tiny wounds and triggers your body’s recovery response.

When you have an injury, you produce collagen, a protein that helps maintain skin volume. So, microneedling helps promote increased collagen to improve the appearance of:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun damage

Microneedling is comfortable. The team applies a topical numbing cream before your procedure, and most patients say it works extremely well, so they feel nearly nothing.

It’s a popular treatment for the face and also addresses issues in areas like the abdomen and thighs.

Is microneedling safe?

Yes, microneedling is safe because the needles are inserted at controlled depths, and a highly trained provider administers your treatment. The ShotDocMD team uses the Collagen P.I.N.® system, which allows for customized needle depths and improved precision versus standard microneedling.

Microneedling is also safe for people with hyperpigmentation (dark skin patches) and melasma (a darker “mask” on the face). Laser and other heat-based treatments can worsen skin discoloration, but that’s not a risk with microneedling.

What happens after microneedling?

After your treatment, your skin will be pink, but it fades quickly. You can wear a mineral-based foundation afterward to conceal any skin redness and then return to your regular foundation after four days.

Most people notice results within a week or two of their first treatment. Your skin looks better and better as you continue generating collagen over time.

How often do I need microneedling treatments?

Most people need three to six treatment sessions to reach their goals, each one month apart. The number of treatments you need depends on the severity of the skin concern. For example, microneedling for fine lines might only require three sessions, but with deep wrinkles, stretch marks, and severe sun damage, you might need six.

How long will microneedling results last?

Microneedling results can lead to significant skin improvements for as long as a year after completing your initial series of treatments. Dr. Kim and the team may recommend a topical retinoid skin cream to help improve and extend your great results.
