Kybella Q&A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently kills fat in the submental area under the chin, aka a “double chin.”

Its main ingredient is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring substance called deoxycholic acid. This acid helps break down and absorb fat, much in the same way your body processes fat naturally.

Kybella targets and permanently dissolves fat cells. This dissolved fat becomes cellular waste that you eliminate naturally.

When should I consider Kybella?

Kybella might be a good choice if you’re unhappy with how your chin area looks. Many people who have a double chin work hard to control their weight but still retain a stubborn fat bulge under their chin. If that sounds familiar, you might be a good Kybella candidate.

Avoiding surgery is one of the main reasons many people consider Kybella. The traditional surgical approach to double chins is liposuction, which involves incisions and suction to remove the fat cells.

Kybella allows you to avoid invasive surgery and still provides amazing results.

Is Kybella similar to fat-shrinking treatments?

No, fat-shrinking treatments use various methods to reduce the fat cell size. But those fat cells are still there and can return to the same size as before. Kybella eliminates the fat cells so it’s impossible for them to return.

What is Kybella treatment like?

The injection process involves a series of needle pricks in the skin under your chin. You’ll receive numbing ice or topical cream to keep you comfortable.

You’ll likely feel some stinging during injections, but it abates quickly. The whole process may take as little as 10 minutes in the ShotDocMD office.

There is a swelling phase after Kybella, in which your double chin will look larger, but it usually recedes in a week or two. Most people notice results after their second treatment session.

How many Kybella treatments will I need?

Dr. Kim evaluates your needs carefully and discusses goals with you. In most cases, she recommends a series of injections one month apart.

The maximum number of Kybella treatments you can receive is six. According to Kybella, many patients get their desired results in two to four treatments. About 59% of patients need the full six treatments to achieve full treatment of their double chin.
