Chemical Peels Q&A

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels use a variety of chemical ingredients to treat a wide range of problems in the skin. In general, chemical peels break down the top layers of dead and damaged skin and help you shed the old skin cells to make way for the new.

At ShotDocMD, the team uses world-class VI peels. Some of the powerful ingredients in VI peels include:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
  • Retinoic acid
  • Kojic acid
  • Phenol
  • Benzoyl peroxide (BPO)
  • Hydrocortisone
  • Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid)
  • Hydroquinone
  • Proprietary mineral blend

Every ingredient works differently, so there are four options, each with a unique blend of ingredients. This allows the ShotDocMD specialists to tailor your VI peel for your particular skin concerns.

What skin problems can chemical peels treat?

VI peels at ShotDocMD are scientifically formulated to treat skin problems such as:

  • Brown spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Fine lines due to aging
  • Sun damage
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Rough skin texture
  • Uneven skin tone

With VI peels, you’ll also notice an improvement in skin clarity (skin clearness and smoothness).

How does the VI chemical peel process work?

The talented aesthetics team administers VI peels in the ShotDocMD office. They clean the skin and then apply the chemical solution. Using a retinol towel, they gently wipe your face and apply the second layer of the peel.

Your skin looks frosted over with the second layer applied. You can then go home, but should leave the peel on, not washing your face until four to six hours later (as directed by the team).

You’ll use a post-peel system that includes:

  • VI Derm SPF 50 plus sun protection
  • VI Derm post-peel protectant
  • Three VI peel post-peel towelettes
  • VI skin cleanser

Use these products as directed to help boost the results of the peel. You can expect your skin to feel tight in the first few days. Then, on the third day, it will start peeling. Don’t pull skin off; allow the peeling to happen naturally.

Peeling is complete in a week, and your skin will look clear, bright, and youthful.

How often do I need chemical peels?

Dr. Kim and the ShotDocMD team recommend scheduling VI peels three times a year to keep your skin in great health and at peak beauty. You may need more frequent peels if you have severe skin damage and signs of aging.
